Funded PhD in Classics and Classical Studies at UFS

The Department of Philosophy & Classics at the University of the Free State invites applications from outstanding candidates for a fully funded PhD students to study towards a PhD in Classics and/or Classical Studies.

The UFS is pleased to offer a three-year, fully funded doctoral scholarship in Latin, Ancient Greek, and Classical Studies, supporting innovative research in one or more of the following areas:

  • Animals in antiquity
  • Graeco-Roman religion and magic
  • Greek and Latin elegy and epic
  • Greek drama

Funding and Duration

Duration: 3 years

Funding: Full tuition fees, a comprehensive stipend and research expenses.

Eligibility

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in a relevant field and have a solid grounding in Latin, Greek and ancient history. A working knowledge of widely used modern European languages is recommended.
