Transformative Readings of Antiquity: Reimagining the Ancient Past

The 36th Biennial Conference of the Classical Association of South Africa will be hosted by the University of Pretoria and will be held from 6 - 9 July 2027. The theme of the conference is 'Transformative Readings of Antiquity: Reimagining the Ancient Past'.

In order to stimulate and promote cross-cultural and transdisciplinary research into the ancient Mediterranean and Western Asia, the annual SASNES conference and the 36th Biennial CASA Conference will be held jointly and hosted by the University of Pretoria’s Department of Ancient and Modern Languages and Cultures in 2027.
We invite papers on the topic of ‘Transformative Readings of Antiquity: Reimagining the Ancient Past’. We welcome contributions that engage with this theme in its broadest possible sense, including, but by no means limited to, interpretation, reception, and related approaches within the contexts of the ancient Mediterranean and Western Asia.
However, papers on any topic relevant to the research areas of either or both societies are welcome. Postgraduate students are also encouraged to submit proposals.

The Van Selms Memorial Lecture speaker for SASNES will be announced in due course.
Submission guidelines for abstract:
1. Name, Surname, and Institution
2. Title of Proposed Paper
3. Abstract (250-300 words)
Each presenter will have 20 minutes to present their paper, followed by 10 minutes for questions and
discussion.
Abstracts should please be submitted to conference@casa-kvsa.org.za no later than 31 March 2027.
No late submissions can be considered.
