The Department studies the ancient cultures and languages of the Mediterranean and Western Asia and offers modules in Ancient Greek, Ancient Cultures, Biblical Hebrew, Latin and Classical Legal Culture.

Spring Meeting (Western Cape)
On Saturday 25 September 2021 Professor Llewelyn Morgan (Brasenose College, Oxford) will present a virtual paper to the Association titled ‘Pallas, son of Hercules’
The paper forms part of the Spring Meeting of the Western Cape branch and is hosted by the University of Cape Town. A separate AGM of the Western Cape branch will follow the talk.
Prof. Benjamin Hendrickx
The Classics community in South Africa is saddened to learn of the death of Professor Ben Hendrickx last week. He was an active member of CASA and later in life devoted his attention to Byzantine studies. He was a valued and respected member of the Department of Greek and Latin Studies at UJ (and RAU) and an internationally recognised authority in his field.
