  • Postgraduate supervision (on Honours and Master’s level);

Online Launch ‘Catullus: Selected Lyric Poems’

Join us for the launch of a new translation of selected lyric poems from Catullus by Richard Whitaker and Douglas Reid Skinner. The event will be held via Microsoft Teams on 20th October 2020 from 17h00 to 18h30 (SAST).

From the publisher’s website: ‘This selection of poems from his small extant body of work aims to show how – whether he composes a tender love lyric to his mis­tress or a boyfriend, an abusive attack on a politician or literary rival, an address to an intimate friend, a vitriolic or obscene satire, or an occasional piece on some small incident of social life – Catullus is deeply engaged with his subject, a writer passionate about his craft, and fully in touch with the centuries of Greek and Roman poetry that came before him.’

Contract position at UNISA

The Classics Unit at the University of South Africa is inviting applications for a Junior Lecturer or Lecturer position of one year (renewable for a second year).

The position will entail teaching Ancient History and Classics within the Department, participate in curriculum development, do research in the field of Greco-Roman antiquity (including completing postgraduate qualifications), and perform academic duties relating to the general administration of the discipline within the Department.


Junior Lecturer
· An Honours degree in Classics (Classical Culture, Ancient History or Greek/Latin language/literature).

Spring Meeting (Western Cape)

On Saturday 5 September 2020 Dr Gail Trimble (Trinity College, Oxford) will present a virtual paper to the Association titled ‘How to build a heroine: Catullus’ Ariadne and Virgil’s Dido’

The paper forms part of the Spring Meeting of the Western Cape branch and is hosted by the University of Cape Town. A separate AGM of the Western Cape branch will follow the talk.
